The Life of Squirrels

The majority of time squirrels can be seen running around chasing each other and hopping around from the tree branches. They play most of the time and only for a small while do they have to gather food to ensure that they can survive longer only so that they can play some more. As I saw them chasing each other and going through the trees with such grace I noticed all the wondrous life around me, but couldn't see the life within and it seemed as though I was a brown jigsaw piece among a cloud puzzle. The squirrels played on and I continued to invade these surroundings. In the distance was the sound of a car, at this point I started to think of the squirrels I was watching and thought of all the time squirrels that get run over. For a moment I thought nothing of it, only until I thought that could be the end of my squirrels playing and watching them be what seemed as happiness. The car never made it to this part of the street. The sun shined on the trees only letting thin rays of light through, but keeping up with providing nice shade. So many colors and shapes and all of them looked just as they should without needing to be any other way. Only a few moments passed and I was looking at the yards until something caught my attention. I saw a small branch with fresh leaves falling from a tree. Ordinarily this wouldn't draw much attention only that this one was falling fast for such a skinny unhardened branch, which was peculiar and to add that I saw some grey and brown mixed in with the branch. I saw the branch hit the ground hard, and now knowing that a squirrel had fallen with it I looked for a scared squirrel to come running from the branch. I watched intently but didn't see anything. I got up to take a closer look and saw the little squirrel lying there. Again I waited until I could be sure that it needed help. During that time I saw other squirrels looking on with me. One was perched on top of the chain link fence, another from a tree, and a few from the yards. Finally, there was small movement. Was it suffering? Scared I wondered if it would need to be put down or if it could go on. Then it got up and was able to limp away. I watched where it was going and saw it going right back up a tree. It had taken the fall and was able to move on. I felt some relief and amazement at what I had just witnessed. It was the life of a squirrel.
